Ava Labs: Institutions Are Still Building In A Washed-Out Market (Before The Next Bull Run)
Hosts Drew Rogers and Zach Fowler interview Zach Hughes, VP of Business Development at Ava Labs, about institutional adoption of blockchain technology and recent developments in tokenization and on-chain finance. Hughes discusses the evolution of Avalanche's focus from purely crypto-native adoption to enterprise and institutional use cases, highlighting projects like the Aave v4 RWA hub and Tare, a private credit marketplace built on Avalanche that brings traditional asset-backed finance on-chain with blockchain and AI infrastructure.
Key takeaways
- Institutional interest in digital assets and blockchain has grown consistently despite crypto price volatility, with banks and asset managers actively building digital asset teams and capabilities.
- The Aave v4 RWA hub demonstrates convergence of tokenization, DeFi, and institutions by instilling utility into tokenized assets and bringing allocators into the ecosystem.
- Tare is a private credit marketplace on Avalanche that brings the entire credit lifecycle on-chain for traditional institutional investors, offering better user experience and solving double pledging and fraud risks inherent in legacy asset-backed finance.
- Real institutional adoption means institutions deploying capital at risk on-chain through day-to-day trading, collateral mobility, and prime brokerage—not just buying crypto ETFs.
- Private credit and asset-backed finance infrastructure has not kept pace with market growth, making blockchain and stablecoins valuable as programmable infrastructure for daily and intraday funding.
- Tokenization is essential infrastructure to upgrade legacy institutional workflows, alongside stablecoins for payments and asset swaps.
- The Avalanche Summit in New York had a notably more institutional focus than previous events, with current and prospective enterprise partners speaking and attending.

Morgan, welcome in.
Zach Hughes
host0:21
Thank you for having going? Oh, wow. Look at that. Look at that graphic.... There. That was the best timing I've ever seen. That's pretty good. Pretty good. Well done. How are you doing, Morgan? I'm good. How are you guys?
Zach Fowler
host0:34
Are We We are are you. Yeah. It's one of those it's one of those weeks. Sickness is in the air. It's going through the household. But, hey, the show must go on. Right? That's true. That's true. Make it rain some avalanche here. Oh, wow.
Drew Rogers
host0:48
Make it snow, I guess. Make it be better. Make it snow. Morgan, this is our first time meeting you. Maybe we get a quick intro on on your role, which sounds so exciting,
Zach Hughes
host0:59
and the vantage point you have... Are you saying that seriously or sarcastically?
Drew Rogers
host1:03
No. I just... I mean, you're talking to two kind of sales go to market guys, so I feel like the VP of BD at Ava Labs seems really, really interesting.
Zach Hughes
host1:13
Yeah. Yeah. Thank you for having me on. I think you guys had Olivia from my team on a few times. She's great. We need 10 of her. But, yeah, I I joined Avolabs almost five years ago to initially focus solely on institutional adoption. So I joined, like, four days before Terra, so my timing was really impeccable. And my job was basically to get banks, asset managers, and FMIs to leverage Avalanche in the context of their blockchain and digital asset strategies.
We had a lot of early success with different banks, Citi, JPMorgan, others. And then, obviously, over the years, kind of grown our network to the world of of asset managers and really the buy side as well as other FMIs, which, you know, which we have a pipeline of. But it's been really interesting to see kind of the evolution of the industry where, really, the worlds of TradFi, DeFi, CeFi tokenization have really converged, and I think that they'll continue to converge.
And so, basically, our team has really just become all things on chain finance. So, of course, institutional and wholesale finance, but also tokenization as well as defined payments. And so it's been really cool to kind of see that evolution and also see really the industry focus writ large, really kind of realize that, you know, institutions and institutional adoption is important, tokenization is important.
And so we've really been, you know, focused on this for quite some time, and so it's it's exciting that, you know, that the ecosystem is set up for it.
Zach Fowler
host2:44
You had your avalanche summit, like... But that was, like, what, a week a week or two ago, and I imagine this was not your first one. How has... How have those evolved over the years? And did this one feel like Yeah. This one did this one feel like a new chapter? Did it feel like, you know, a new book? You're turning a new page? Like, how... Yeah. How have they evolved? Yeah. So, I mean, Avila Labs
Zach Hughes
host3:05
has always been headquartered in New York, and it was the first avalanche summit in New York. So it almost felt like a homecoming where, you know, because we've been focused on institutional adoption and then just like Avalanche for at large is increasingly focused on, you know, business, better business outcomes for our partners, it was very fitting to bring the summit to New York.
And to your point, it did feel a little bit different in that there was a much greater focus on institutions, enterprises, and had a lot of our current and prospective partners there meeting there, speaking there. And so it did have, like, a fundamentally, I would say, like, more grown up feel. I think the industry has been growing up over the past few years, which is exciting to see.
And so, you know, we were we were happy to kind of bring it home to New York and and, you know, have that decidedly different and, I think, better field.
Drew Rogers
host4:03
Mhmm. Morgan, so you said five years at Ava Labs. I'd I'd love to think through just as we kind of go into q four as of today of this year, how you think about 2026 as even just macro, what you've seen. We were talking before you joined just around how... The the current state of things. Like, it feels very interesting. Luca from m zero described this year as kind of, like, weird and sideways this morning on the timeline. I'm wondering from your vantage point, like, what your current moment is.
Like, how do you how do you feel about this sense of optimism, but also, like, nascency? How do you compare and contrast 2026 to maybe previous four years? How how are you thinking about the current moment macro?
Zach Hughes
host4:51
Yeah. I mean, I think probably when Luca was saying that, he was talking about, like, crypto prices writ large, which I've tried to stop looking at. I think, like, just frankly, generally, you know, despite the fact that I think, like, cryptocurrency positioning has been washed out and the market has dealt with a lot. I think throughout all of that time, institutional interest, last and this year, has only grown.
I think you're seeing a lot of banks and asset managers and FMIs building out their, you know, digital asset teams and their capabilities. And so a lot of them are continuing to kind of hire up and dedicate resources to this space, whether it's in, like, the custody in the custody space, prime brokerage space. Obviously, a lot of work being done in tokenization, tokenized deposits, tokenized funds, and tokenized equities, and really everything in between.
So in our discussions from an institutional perspective, whether it's with TradFi or fintech kind of crowd, they've kind of continued continued to build. I think, really, the impetus for that was obviously the last kind of administration coming into place, but also the passing of Genius, which really kind of put an impetus on institutions to create and operationalize a stablecoin or digital cash strategy.
And and, you know, people are looking forward to kind of continued, ideally, guidance and guardrails, but the focus and kind of resource commitment, I think, has continued this year. So it's definitely been, you know, exciting for us because, obviously, from an institutional adoption standpoint, none of these things happen overnight. A lot of the things that we announced in September, we've been working on for months, if not years. So all that work kind of continues in the background.
Drew Rogers
host6:44
What... From an institutional lens, what are you most proud of closing out the year? Like, Genius happened a little over a year ago. We've had this year to kind of partner, build, go... Like, get to market with things. As you're thinking about these institutions that you're working with and what they are building or have built, you know, if you're at the kind of q four Christmas dinner table and someone's like, hey. What's, like, the most meaningful thing that got done this year?
Or one of the most meaningful things, what sticks out in your mind on the kind of adoption side of what you've been working on?
Zach Hughes
host7:19
Yeah. So I think one of the things that we're particularly excited about going into the end of the year is the launch of the Aave v four RWA hub. And why I'm particularly excited about that is, you know, typically, when you think about Aave or other kind of DeFi primitives, you think about, you know, crypto assets or crypto native assets.
And, really, this RWA hub, which I'm hoping is really the first of many RWA hubs that we have on Avalanche, really demonstrates that convergence, right, of tokenization and DeFi and institutions. And and I think that, you know, it... It's not just about issuing and tokenizing assets, but really instilling them with utility and bringing more kind of allocators into the ecosystem and actually doing trades with them, which is which is exciting to see.
And so I think that's just, a culmination of of a lot of the work that we've been doing, not just this year, but in years past. And then, relatedly, we've been also extremely focused on private credit, specifically asset backed finance and fintech lending.
And over the past couple of years, we've really worked on, you know, cultivating an ecosystem of originators, capital allocators, credit infrastructure platforms to really bring, like, the end to end credit life cycle on chain rather than just, you know, tokenizing a fund, which is, like, pretty far downstream in the process, which we can talk about. But you'll start to see more and more things come out of that effort. Most recently, obviously, we announced...
Or Terre, one of our partners announced their their seed funding round at Summit, and they're kind of a a quintessential partner in our ecosystem that really demonstrates
Zach Fowler
host9:04
a lot of a lot of those insights. Can you can you break down, Tara? I think we're gonna try to bring them on the show in the next next week. Yeah. You should definitely do that. You'll you'll enjoy chatting with Kevin. Freddit Freddit has been a really, really hot topic. One of our, you know, other ones we've enjoyed talking with is the Tech Dollar team. And, but how would you sum up, you know, first first minute quick elevator pitch? Like, what is Tare? What are they doing? Why do they matter?
Zach Hughes
host9:26
So Tare is essentially building a, call it, private credit marketplace, on Avalanche. And it really is meant to bring in very traditional institutional investors to think banks, insurance companies, asset managers who engage in the private credit markets already today on a day to day basis, but effectively bringing them a better user experience, better product because it is all done on chain. And so I think it's funny.
A lot of the work that has been done to date in the tokenization space, it's almost been the other way around. It's been traditional asset managers selling existing products to what they deem to be a net new distribution channel, which is crypto natives.
And so when you kind of think about the value prop for traditional investors of why would they wanna buy a tokenized asset versus, you know, a traditional asset, whether it's like a treasury, a money market fund, equity, whatever that might be off chain, there's largely today not a ton of compelling reasons to access that thing on chain in tokenized form.
And so what Terra is really doing end to end is putting the credit origination, verification, servicing, securitization, you know, life cycle on chain, and therefore creating an... Fundamentally better product for the investors that already buy it today. That could look like ultimately a higher rate of return. It could look like, you know, a a a more kind of controlled asset from a risk and control perspective because it avoids double pledging of collateral.
It avoids the fraud risk that has historically plagued the asset backed finance space. And so they're effectively taking it from the ground up and and and using blockchain in a combination of blockchain and and AI to create this marketplace for very traditional investors with, you know, all the infrastructure obviously abstracted away under the hood.
Institutions shouldn't know or care that it's using, you know, blockchain or tokenization, but it offers a fundamentally better experience and solves a real world problem for them.
Drew Rogers
host11:37
What's one question we should ask the Tare team when we bring them on? What would you wanna know or dive into?
Zach Hughes
host11:44
That's a good question. I think... Well, I think... And then you guys will inherently go through this, but I think the Tare's team background... Right? There's three cofounders, and they each came from, like, a very specific part of whether TradFi or the blockchain world that really set them up to succeed and execute in this space. Definitely go into their backgrounds. They're they're all super interesting and come from, like, a slightly nuanced or different place in the ecosystem.
And then, honestly, you should drill them on, like, how... Like, you know, it's such a big undertaking, how they plan on on executing. Obviously, a lot of people kind of pontificate and and talk the talk, but not many people walk the walk and actually execute. So thinking about their plan of execution, as well as... You know, again, when we talk to teams that are doing tokenization, we always ask, like, why is this better than the traditional way of doing things? And so I would challenge them on that as well.
Zach Fowler
host12:43
We
Drew Rogers
host12:44
we need to get better at we're not good at drilling people respectfully.
Zach Hughes
host12:48
Maybe don't, like, don't say it in his words.
Zach Fowler
host12:51
We This is a few this is a handful of moments. They would... Honestly, they would love that. I mean, they love getting into the into the It is interesting to to talk with, like, builders, especially ones that have kind of done, like, the interview circuit and to talk to them afterwards if you're like, what what do you like in your interview? What are you kinda burnt out on? And, we've just Yeah. Yeah. Some...
Having spaces sometimes, like, nerd out, go deep, and, like, speak freely, it's it's always the balance of like doing and... It You there's some... It was sort of the gotcha, like, oh my gosh, you're gonna clip that and now I mean it's gonna look bad. But sometimes it's like, say something that's a little edgy.
Zach Hughes
host13:27
He... Okay. So Kevin and I Kevin's, one of the cofounders and CEO. They both came from a trading floor. So we are used to, you know, difficult conversations,
Zach Fowler
host13:37
tense moments, working under press... Pressure sense of urgency. So he... He'll he'll love that. Yeah. I I wanna ask you, like, broader, like, when we think about, like, this term, like, institutional adoption, I think about three or four years ago, and it was, okay. Are are people gonna... You know, are are are hedge funds gonna be buying Avalanche? Are they gonna put it... You know, this is gonna be their main There's gonna be ETFs, and people are gonna be buying all these digital assets.
Do you feel like this term in sort of institutional adoption itself is kinda, like, evolved and we're seeing it take, like, a new form factor? Do you think the news that we're seeing with either, like, Tare or even, like, with Goldman Sachs, is this where we always wanted the space to go, or is it kind of evolved and gone a different route than what people thought of initially when we were really pitch... Pledging this thing of institutional adoption? Yeah. It's so funny because, like, what is institutional?
I mean, there's so many different types of institutions. Right? So, like, it's just such a
Zach Hughes
host14:30
buzzword. Right? And so I think we, on the one hand, just have to, like, distill which institutions and, like, what does adoption mean. I think, in general, again, kind of like what we've seen so far is it's been mostly... At least as it relates to, like, public networks, is really mostly asset managers because they are not governed by the same kind of regulators as banks.
They've been able to enter the space in that they've been effectively tokenizing their assets and kind of, again, selling them in a new form to to crypto natives or through fintechs and multi platforms in, you know, in tokenized form.
But we haven't seen to date, really, and very, very, like, selectively, but we really haven't seen to date a ton of these institutions, frankly, whether they're banks or asset managers or hedge funds or whoever, come into the space and use the technology in the context of their day to day trades, in the context of their deploying capital at risk into something that is using blockchain.
And that is really what I'm excited about and what we've been focused on and which is why we're excited about some of the work that we're doing in private credit because you're creating a compelling reason for an institution to deploy capital at risk themselves in the context of their day to day fund mandate effectively on chain. And so that is like... You know, there's a lot of, obviously, retail capital in the space and liquidity.
But compared to the institutional capital that is off chain today, like, that is who we're trying to go after. Right? Like... Because that, like, dwarfs by orders of magnitude whatever is on chain today collectively in the whole crypto ecosystem.
And so that's why we've been really focused with working with the tares of the world and Tranche and and the various tech enablement platforms on Avalanche to bring the off chain capital, whether that's institutions or retail on chain today because we're solving for them a real world problem, a real world pain point.
And so for me, like, once we start seeing asset managers deploying capital at risk on chain, banks trading with their clients on chain, whether through collateral mobility or equities trading or prime brokerage or whatever that might be, that for me is really a sign of institutional adoption, which is separate to your point of, like, them buying, you know, crypto ETFs or crypto products. Like, of course, that... I don't wanna minimize that. That is definitely, like, looking at crypto as an asset class for sure.
But but I get excited about really when these institutions are actually using the tech under the hood because, like, it makes their businesses better.
Zach Fowler
host17:10
Yeah. Well, it it reminds me of... I just made a clip that kinda mentioned this with, Matt Hogan talking about this Solana ETF and, like, why would somebody buy Solana? It's like, what what are the bets that you're making when you're even accumulating the assets? Like, at the end of the day, Avalanche, Solana, all these... None of these are are valuable if people aren't doing, you know, the... Whatever Using it. Whatever form of adoption. Yeah. They're not using the thing.
So then when we think about this term tokenization super cycle, what comes to mind when you hear that? Is that a is that a buzzword? Is this an actual thing that's happening, like, from your perspective?
Zach Hughes
host17:46
I mean, I guess it's a super cycle in that there's many more individuals and and institutions. Stablecoins super cycle over then? Does that mean we have to... Are we... Is the Okay. Also, I'm just... Stablecoins are, like, the quintessential tokenized asset. Like, they're the quintessential RWA. So I've always thought about stablecoins as RWAs, which I feel like people historically haven't thought about. But... No. I I... By the way, I also think, like, you need stablecoins alongside tokenized assets. Right?
That's the whole point to, like, swap. Yes. Thank you. To swap assets for payments. And part of the reason also why I think this time is different from, like, an RWA or tokenization perspective is because in 2017, right, like, tokenization was around back then, but you didn't really have a lot of the, like, institutional grade infrastructure in place that is now stablecoins custody, compliant tokenization platforms, all that stuff. So I think those things go hand in hand. But as it relates to super cycle, like, no.
I think I think it's here to stay. I think, frankly, it's like a boring piece of technology, but, like, tokenization is like a quintessential piece of infrastructure that you need to upgrade legacy institutional infrastructure and workflows. So it's like a key piece of the puzzle.
Drew Rogers
host19:04
Any any other notes on... As we close here, just like private credit, the role that private markets and private credit play and companies staying private longer? We've we've been, I think, seeing a rise of just, like, the influence of... I think growing up, we kinda had this, like, public markets first mindset. It seems like private markets and and the opportunity for credit within them seems so emerging as a conversation.
But any other, like, thoughts on that as you guys think through TARE or or other opportunities related?
Zach Hughes
host19:40
Yeah. I mean, I think... So private credit, but specifically within that, like, asset backed finance, think I about, like, BNPL loans, auto loans, student loans, music royalties. Mhmm. That's been such a growing... Like, completely separate of digital assets. It's just been such a growing kind of space, and a lot of large asset managers from, you know, PIMCO to Apollo to Blackstone, they all estimate the TAM to be very large and growing. And...
But just what's been interesting is, like, as that as that space has grown, and especially in, like, high velocity and high turnover things like BNPL, for example, or, like, you know, receivables financing Mhmm. The... Just the underlying infrastructure supporting it just hasn't kept pace with the pace of, like, the growth of the credit market.
And so, again, that's another reason why I get excited about blockchain, stablecoins, and tokenization because this is really, like, the programmable infrastructure that can upgrade that kind of plumbing to meet the needs of the business. And so, obviously, I'm bullish. Obviously, I'm I'm drinking my own Kool Aid, but this is really a space where, you know, I think not a lot of ecosystems are focused and...
But really where I have seen firsthand, like, traditional businesses being like, oh, you can fund me on a daily basis or an intraday basis. You can fund me on nights and weekends. You cannot make me have to sit there for half a day every week reconciling incoming loan requests with the terms of the facility. Like, it's it's been awesome to kind of see, like, traditional companies face light up about, you know, this technology because it solves, again, a real world problem for them.
And so just really excited as we go into 2027 and beyond to really grow out this ecosystem.
Drew Rogers
host21:32
We are too. Excited to continue to see it unfold and continue to watch what happens as it relates to private credit. We'll have the Terra team on. I think there's a unread
Zach Fowler
host21:45
email on my inbox related to this No. It was just... So There's one this morning that I owe, sending a few few time slots over. So Yeah. Shout out to
Drew Rogers
host21:55
Matt Matt Homer from the venture department, I think also on the cap table there. So Yep. Tara is getting some buzz today. But, Morgan, thanks for the time. It was great to see you. Thank you. For having me. Appreciate it. See you, Edwin. You too.
